Buying Plasterboard Online in Australia: What to Order, How Much You Need, and Delivery Tips (April 2026)
Share
Ordering plasterboard (gyprock/drywall) online can save hours of running around—if you know what you’re buying and how it gets delivered. Whether you’re a DIY renovator or a trade customer, this guide covers the most common plasterboard types, how to estimate quantities, and the delivery details that prevent job-site headaches.
1) Plasterboard basics: sheets, thickness, and what they’re for
Plasterboard comes in standard sheet sizes and a few common thicknesses. The right choice depends on where it’s being installed and whether you need extra performance (fire, moisture, sound).
- Standard plasterboard: Everyday walls and ceilings in dry internal areas.
- Moisture-resistant (MR): Bathrooms, laundries, kitchens—areas with higher humidity.
- Fire-rated: Garages, boundary walls, and fire-rated assemblies where compliance matters.
- Sound-rated / acoustic: Bedrooms, media rooms, multi-residential and anywhere you want better noise control.
- Ceiling board / sag-resistant: Designed to stay flatter on ceilings, especially with wider joist spacing.
Tip: If you’re unsure, tell us the room type, framing (timber/steel), and whether it’s a wall or ceiling. We can point you at the correct board and compatible compounds, tape, and screws.
2) How many sheets do I need? A quick estimating method
You don’t need a full takeoff to get a solid estimate. Here’s a practical approach:
- Measure the wall area: (perimeter of the room) × (ceiling height) = total wall area.
- Subtract openings: Deduct doors/windows if you like—roughly 1.8–2.0 m² per standard door as a quick rule.
- Add ceiling area: room length × room width.
- Add wastage: Typically 10% for straightforward rooms, 15% for lots of small cut-ins/angles.
Example: A 3 m × 4 m room with 2.4 m ceilings:
- Perimeter = 14 m; wall area = 14 × 2.4 = 33.6 m²
- Ceiling area = 3 × 4 = 12 m²
- Total ≈ 45.6 m² → add 10% wastage ≈ 50 m²
From there, choose a sheet size and divide. If you’re using 1200 × 2400 mm sheets (2.88 m² each), 50 m² ÷ 2.88 ≈ 18 sheets.
3) Don’t forget the “small stuff” that makes the job go smoothly
Most delays on site aren’t caused by the sheets—they’re caused by missing consumables. When you order plasterboard online, consider adding:
- Plasterboard screws (correct length for your board thickness and frame type)
- Jointing compound and tape (paper or fibreglass depending on the system)
- Corner beads (internal/external)
- Adhesive (for certain wall systems)
- Sanding sheets, trowels, and mixing tools
4) Delivery tips: access, unloading, and protecting the sheets
Plasterboard is large, heavy, and easy to damage if the delivery plan isn’t clear. To get a clean drop and keep sheets straight:
- Confirm access: Let us know about tight driveways, low trees, steep slopes, or restricted parking.
- Choose a safe drop point: Flat ground, close to the work area, away from rain run-off.
- Plan for unloading: Have enough hands on site (or request help options if available).
- Keep it dry: Store sheets under cover and off the ground. Moisture damage can ruin edges and cause swelling.
- Acclimatise when possible: Bringing sheets into the space before install reduces movement issues.
5) Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)
- Ordering the wrong board for wet areas → Use MR board in bathrooms/laundries.
- Underestimating wastage → Add 10–15% depending on complexity.
- Forgetting compounds/tape → Add them to the same order to avoid stoppages.
- Not thinking about delivery access → Tell us early so the right vehicle and plan is used.
